IT WASN’T UNTIL THE end of the party, after Susan had opened all of her gifts and the guests had started to leave, that my mother approached me and Lincoln. She’d locked eyes with me a few times during the party, but the two of us had never gotten close enough to talk.

Unlike most bridal showers I’d been to in the past, Susan didn’t ask me or Tameka to speak or make toasts or anything like that. There were no party games. Instead, Susan ran everything herself with the assistance of her fiancé, Ray, who had, in fact, made it to the party.

“You must be the man my daughter is shacking up with,” Mother said, approaching us. She glared, eyeing us. Lincoln placed his hand on the small of my back. He wasn’t nervous. He wasn’t upset by this interaction.

Somehow, that knowledge calmed me.

“Hello, Mother.”

“Ivy, what the hell is this?”

“Lincoln, this is my mom,” I told him. “Eleanor.”

“It’s nice to meet you,” he said.

“I wish I could say the same,” she snapped. Turning to me, she frowned. “What happened to Randall?”

“Mom, I’m not interested in Randall, nor have I ever been.”

“He thought he was going to be your date to the wedding.”

“I have no idea why he would have thought that,” I told her. “The two of us have barely had three conversations ever. Also, at no point have either one of us mentioned the wedding.”

“Well, he’s very disappointed,” Mother said.

“That’s too bad,” I nodded. “Mom, Lincoln is a really nice person. He’s actually Tameka’s cousin.” That seemed to interest my mom. She raised an eyebrow.

“The one who’s a construction worker or the one who’s an attorney?”

“The one who’s an attorney,” he said.

I tried to hide my shock. He was a lawyer? We’d discussed potential made-up jobs for him, but we’d basically agreed to keep things as vague as possible. He hadn’t told me he was a real-life attorney. I wondered if he had to share that now because Tameka knew the two of us were going to the wedding together. It made things a little more complicated, didn’t it?

Mother, however, didn’t miss the slight dilation of my eyes when he said that.

“You didn’t know he was a lawyer? How did you not know that?”

“I knew it,” I said, lying in a way I hoped sounded smooth. “In fact, we just had lunch with his boss a few days ago. It was nice.”

“You looked shocked when he said he was an attorney just now.”

“I’m not sure what to tell you, Mom.”

My mother frowned. For the night being such a happy occasion, she sure did seem pissed.

“It’s so nice to finally meet you,” Lincoln said, changing the subject. “Ivy has told me so much about you.”

“Did she tell you that I’m divorced and that I hate weddings?” Mom growled.

“She mentioned that you and your husband separated when she was a kid. That must have been tough,” he said. How the hell did his voice sound like smooth silk? He’d done this before.
